HVO Fuel: The Drop-in Diesel Alternative with up to 90% Lower Net CO2 Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The UK’s net-zero target is fast approaching and cutting harmful emissions has never been more important. Not only that, but businesses have a legal duty to reduce their environmental impact. With customers increasingly seeking sustainable fuel products and new laws set to come into place, there’s no better time than the present to switch your diesel for HVO fuel to reduce up to 90% of net CO2 emissions right away.
As one of the UK’s largest HVO fuel suppliers, Speedy Fuels can deliver HVO fuel to wherever you are in the UK, with 92% of drop-offs made within 24 hours. Call 0330 123 3773 to place an order or to find out more about our advanced renewable diesel fuel.
What is HVO fuel?
Hydrotreated vegetable oil is a paraffinic diesel fuel that can be used as a direct replacement for both red and white diesel. It offers superior operational and environmental performance over fossil diesel with vast environmental benefits that support existing logistical infrastructure.
What is HVO fuel made from?
HVO is synthesised from 100% renewable raw materials such as vegetable oils, animal oils and fats, which reduces net CO2 greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90%. All raw materials are checked and verified and the fuel’s credentials are audited by the Department for Transport (DFT) to ensure both sustainability and product integrity are certified.
HVO fuel tackles the environmental and performance issues seen by earlier-generation biofuels and conventional fuels. This is due to a hydrogen-based production process, which results in a paraffinic diesel product with low aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbon content with no sulphur. With zero FAME content, HVO doesn’t face the instability and operability issues that many mineral types of diesel and biofuels face.
Each HVO shipment to Speedy Fuels is supplied with a certificate authenticating the Renewability and Sustainability of the product as well as the overall GHG CO2e (g/MJ) figure associated with the shipment and comparing that with an internationally recognised reference figure for fossil transport fuel. Our Net 90% reduction claim is a median GHG reduction figure based on HVO fuel technology and is often higher. We only claim 90% GHG reduction due to variability on a batch-to-batch basis. Furthermore, Speedy Fuels offsets the delivery mileage associated with all our deliveries through the purchase of carbon credits.
Why use HVO fuel?
Many alternatives to the harmful emissions released from fossil fuels aren’t straightforward; from charging points to new pipework and unique storage conditions. All of this new infrastructure requires money, storage space and new skills.
The advantage of running your business on HVO fuel is that you don’t need to worry about any of the above. HVO fuel can be used as a direct, drop-in alternative to diesel; it can be stored in the same fuel tank and it can used in exactly the same way as white and red diesel.
HVO fuel provides a straightforward solution for businesses that are currently using fossil diesel and are looking to lower their carbon emissions. By using HVO fuel, you will join us in tackling climate change head-on by sustainably fuelling your operations.
Drop-in diesel alternative
HVO fuel can be used as a drop-in replacement for white or red diesel without having to adjust engines. It conforms to EN15940 & ASTM D975 standards for paraffinic & diesel fuels, the Fuel Quality Directive 2009/30/EC Annex 2, and has been approved for use by a large number of OEMs.
Clean burning fuel
The clean burn properties of Speedy HVO fuel cut particulate production, helping to increase air quality, and prolong the lifetime of emission control systems (where fitted) in addition to improving engine cleanliness. HVO fuel offers improved combustion further reducing emissions such as NOx, unburnt hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide.
Long shelf life
HVO fuel has a shelf life of up to 10 years compared to just 1 year for mineral diesel, which means there’s a significantly reduced need for regular testing and standing stock replacement.

HVO Fuel vs FAME biodiesel
HVO fuel is a competitor in the UK market against first-generation FAME (fatty acid methyl ester), B100 or biodiesel and is proven to be usable without dilution into fossil fuels or compromising performance and maximising environmental benefit. The legislated rise of FAME in fuels has led to fossil fuels continuing to suffer from several problems that decrease its shelf-life when in storage:
- FAME biodiesel has varying degrees of unsaturation which are susceptible to oxidation
- FAME biodiesel absorbs atmospheric moisture, increasing the risk of microbial attack over time
- FAME biodiesel is prone to waxing in cold temperatures, impairing its usability
All the above means that diesel which has been blended with FAME has to be regularly monitored to ensure it remains reliable and usable.
HVO fuel has none of these problems, as it’s 100% hydrocarbon. As a synthetic product, the molecules are consistent and uniform and cannot be attacked by water or bacteria and fungi. This means that HVO fuel performs much better than regular diesel in several areas:
- No sulphur content – cleaner burn and reduced emissions
- Better cold temperature performance – excellent cold start properties in winter
- Up to 10-year storage lifetime compared to 1 year for mineral diesel
- High cetane number – offers improved starting performance, clean combustion and a reduced likelihood of waxing in cold weather
