What is AdBlue?

AdBlue, also known as diesel exhaust fluid or AUS32, is an aqueous urea solution made from 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% deionised water.

The German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA) own the trademark for AdBlue which ensures quality standards are maintained by ISO 22241 specifications.

How is AdBlue used?

In October 2006, the EU introduced a law requiring vehicle manufacturers to reduce the number of pollutants in the atmosphere. This resulted in a process known as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) which requires the use of AdBlue in all Euro IV and Euro V vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes.

Through SCR, AdBlue eliminates nitrogen oxides (NOx) released in diesel engine exhaust emissions. Large diesel vehicles have a designated AdBlue tank in which the solution is stored.

This is then injected into the exhaust (at a rate of 2% of the diesel consumption volume) as it moves through the engine. It then vaporises and decomposes to form ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia breaks the NOdown to form water and nitrogen, which are both harmless to the environment and released through the exhaust.

How do I store AdBlue?

AdBlue must be stored between 11oC and 30oC to maximise its 12-month lifespan. Speedy Fuels supplies a wide range of AdBlue storage tanks, from barrels to IBCs to large plastic and steel tanks, which are perfectly suited to store your AUS32 solution.

Is AdBlue safe to handle?

AdBlue is usually safe to handle, however it can corrode some metals and must be transported and stored with care. We recommend storing AdBlue in a cool and well-ventilated area and in a suitable storage tank.

We also supply both hand and electric pump products to aid with the safe handling of AdBlue. These pumps ensure the dispensing process is as easy and safe as possible. However, you should always take care when handling AdBlue and wash your hands after contact.
