A core aspect of our service has always been to ensure that our customers have access to the best quality oils, fuels and lubricants at competitive prices – and encouraging the use of the cleanest alternatives. Fuels like HVO.

Why change to HVO fuel?

Making the switch to HVO fuel was a simple decision for us.

We began voluntarily offsetting our delivery mileage in 2012 in an effort to reduce our environmental impact. In the intervening years, we’ve implemented a regular maintenance and updating schedule on our all-DAF fleet to maximise efficiency, as well as increased our recycling and energy efficiency initiatives across our offices. We will continue to make changes to our operations that reduces our environmental impact and that of our customers.  

HVO fuel has enabled us to take our green efforts further; it’s an advanced renewable diesel alternative that reduces net CO2 emissions by up to 90% in addition to slashing notifiable Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) output; all whilst being 100% sustainable and renewable.

Together with the rest of the Crown Group, the decision to move from mineral diesel to HVO fuel in all of our road-going operations should save an average of 3,080 tonnes of net CO2 emissions every year across the group, the same weight as 770 Asian elephants!

Was making the switch to HVO fuel difficult?

HVO is an advanced renewable diesel that can, due to its paraffinic chemical structure and compliance with EN15940 standards, be dropped into existing diesel infrastructure with no alterations or modifications. This made the switch as simple as refuelling our wagons, vans and trailers with HVO instead of diesel – with no need fit expensive modifications.

It has also allowed us to show our customers that HVO fuel is a sustainable choice for businesses that need an immediate and effective solution to cut their emissions. Unlike most electric or hydrogen-based systems, HVO is available now and is fully compatible with existing diesel infrastructure; a stepping stone towards net zero whilst we work towards making newer, cleaner technologies viable for businesses and consumers alike. 

HVO fuel offers:

  • Up to 90% reduction to net CO2 emissions
  • Drop-in functionality – HVO is compliant to EN15940 & ASTM D975 standards and is approved for use by a wide range of OEMs
  • Cleaner burning properties – HVO improves engine cleanliness, reducing build-up during combustion and lowering the risk of engine issues
  • Extended shelf life – HVO lasts for up to 10 years in storage compared to just 1 for mineral diesel, significantly reducing the need for regular testing and standing stock replacement
