What are engine oils?

Engine and motor oils aren’t just pure oil; they are usually a combination of a base oil and one or more additives that provide the lubricant’s desired qualities. These can affect the oil’s properties to make it thicker and more resistant to extreme pressure as with EP additives, or detergents that help it to clear away debris or deposits.

Broadly speaking, our engine oils are from at least one of three types of base oil: mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic.

Why do we need engine oils?

Motor oils are essential to the smooth operation of engines, whether they are free-standing or mounted in vehicles.

Engines and motors contain a multitude of moving parts, most of which are meticulously designed with minimal tolerances. This means that they will rub against one another, creating friction and wearing away at the precise parts that they contain – damage that will over time, ruin the engine’s function.

Motor and engine oils help to minimise this friction and wear, with some varieties even having cleaning properties to remove any deposits or debris buildup that could damage pistons, seals and cylinders. This serves to:

  • Increase an engine’s working lifespan
  • Protect against corrosion and damage
  • Reduce friction, wear and tear
  • Help to dissipate heat
  • Reduce fuel consumption by increasing efficiency
  • Decrease repair costs

Mineral base oils

These are the most basic form of motor oil bases, typically extracted from crude oil during fractional distillation and other subsequent processes. They are naturally occurring and are typically one of the cheaper options, and due to their long history of use tend to be suited for older vehicles, engines and motorcycles.

Synthetic base oils

Synthetic oils have been designed to provide high-quality, consistent performance and protection against corrosion, friction and wear. They are made from synthetic materials rather than naturally occurring elements, such as esters and polyalphaolefins (PAOs), and are refined to remove impurities and non-uniform compounds.

This leaves a consistent product that provides excellent lubrication and engine efficiency, and is ideal for modern high-performance vehicles.

Semi-synthetic base oils

A semi-synthetic engine oil is a blend of both mineral and synthetic oils, which is designed to carry the best properties of its constituent parts. They often offer improved performance and longer usage lifespans over mineral oil variants, whilst also being cheaper than purely synthetic products.

Monograde vs multigrade lubricants

Monograde and multigrade lubricants are varieties of engine oils that have different properties that make them perfect for different conditions.

Monograde lubricants are suitable for use within a strict set of conditions, which often means that they need to be changed when the seasons see temperatures soaring or plummeting, such as in winter or summer. By contrast, multigrade lubricants are suitable for use in a wider range of temperatures as denoted by their SAE rating.
