Metalworking fluids are liquids that are used to lubricate the point of contact between a tool and the worked metal. They work by reducing heat and friction between the two, and by clearing metal particles from the working area. They are available in a number of different formulations, but there are four main categories which include:
Water-soluble metalworking oils are a concentrated mix of oils and various additives which are then diluted with water to make emulsions, which are usually milky in colour. This combination of oils and water provides both cooling and lubrication, which makes water-soluble oils one of the most commonly used metalworking fluids.
Straight metalworking oils are usually just that – petroleum-based oils that have excellent lubricity and rust-preventing qualities. They can also contain additives to enhance their performance but are typically used neat.
Primarily water-based, synthetic metalworking fluids contain a number of additives that provide the desired qualities. They see use predominantly in high-speed processes due to their excellent cooling and low foaming characteristics.
Semi-synthetic metalworking fluids are a complex mix of oils, water and additives that provide a balance between lubricating and cooling properties. They typically have a more transparent appearance than the milkier soluble category but gain clarity as they are diluted.
Metalworking fluids can cause skin irritation or dermatitis, and extended exposure to aerosolised mixtures can damage the lungs and upper respiratory tract. Extreme care must be taken in their transport, storage and use, which is why we offer a range of service monitoring programmes in accordance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommendations.
These include tests for contamination, pH, dilution and dip-slide culture testing, but more in-depth analysis is available through our Lubricant Testing service. We also supply a full range of ancillary products to help you safely store and dispense your metalworking fluids, including drip trays, pumps and spill kits – visit our oil dispensing equipment page to find out more.
