Biodiesel: An Eco-Friendly Diesel Alternative
As a leading biodiesel supplier, we can deliver the biodiesel you need, regardless of where you’re based in the UK. We blend and test our fuel with vegetable-based oil in-house to ensure you receive the highest-quality product.
Engine manufacturers recommend mixing 5% vegetable-based oil with the fuel. However, we can supply larger concentrations to meet your specific requirements upon request with all our biodiesel blends meet BS EN 14214 specifications.
Please note, we supply biodiesel in bulk across the UK with a minimum delivery quantity of 10,000 litres. Call us today on 0330 123 3773 to speak with our fuel team about your biodiesel requirements
What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is made from either vegetable oils or animal fats which react with alcohol during a process known as esterification. The resulting biodiesel products are called Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) or Fatty Acid Ethyl Esters (FAEE) depending on the alcohol used. Both can be used in diesel engines, either standalone or alongside mineral diesel, with FAME being the most commonly used.
Biodiesel provides similar energy and power content to Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) but has become a desirable alternative to fossil diesel over time as suppliers and users seek to reduce harmful emissions.
Why use biodiesel?
- Almost zero sulphur content
- No aromatic content
- Energy and power content can be compared
- Flashpoint of 150oC compared to 60oC for mineral diesel
- Huge reduction in particulates and hydrocarbons
- 70% reduction in carbon monoxide emissions
- Biodegradable and non-toxic
- Lower maintenance cost
Where does biodiesel come from?
A number of animal and vegetable oils are used to create biodiesel, including:
- Palm
- Rapeseed
- Canola
- Soy
- Linseed
- Coconut
- Mustard
- Tallow
- Used cooking oils
Biodiesel has been the sole diesel source across continental Europe for almost 10 years. However, in the UK the majority of biodiesel is used to blend mineral diesel.
25% of UK emissions are produced by the transport sector and low carbon fuels are needed to reduce help reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. The government has recognised the role biofuels will play in achieving the UK’s net zero carbon target, which has led to fuel suppliers increasing the supply and availability of renewable fuels.
